Week 4

On Monday we went around the NCAD Graduate Exhibition. Our tutors thought it was a good chance for us to see some of the other undergraduate projects and to get some inspiration for our own work.

There was some great projects there coming from undergraduate students. Some of the projects were of such high quality and there was some connections I was making between them and my own project which gave me some ideas for things like design of my design rationale (I didn't know what they were before this visit) and I got a general idea of what was possibly within the time frame that I have.

Later on that day I got an opportunity to visit NCBI, National Council for the Blind Ireland, and speak to someone who works there who has been blind since birth. I got some really good initial insights which reinforced my own research that I have done. Some of the difficulties that he has included environmental changes like bins being thrown around the side walk on collection days, cars being parked up on curbs, wing mirrors sticking out of cars, general obstacles that aren't permanent that people with sight can avoid.

An interesting point he made is that design should be universal, navigating through a building should be accessible by everyone. Accessibility should be universal.

Indoor navigation is a big area that I have come across in different papers. It's being looked into but I haven't come across any solid solutions yet myself.

Right now there isn't a specific area that I am looking into. Navigating and getting around outdoors, indoors, avoiding obstacles is something that I'm researching. I am going back to the centre later on in the week to attend a focus group and get some insights with them, run some sort of workshop with them, try to make it fun for them and for me to get the most out of meeting them.
