Week 1
Today was the first day of our third and final Semester of the year. Our tutors, Marc and Emma briefed us on our final project, the milestones and deadlines they have made to guide us through the summer and the kind of deliverables we should aim to have by the end of the 14 weeks.
I still am not 100% certain about what I want to do. During the year we submitted a couple of written assignments and in at least one of mine I did some research into projects by the Urban IxD, City Data Future, Future Cities Catapult etc. Some of these were really interesting future type projects, combining a bit of virtual reality and speculative design, imagining what cities and public spaces could be like in the future, hearing other peoples thoughts as you walk through a certain area. Right now there are a lot of Future City projects taking place in Dublin and the term Big Data is being thrown around more frequently. A combination of all of this got me thinking that Future Cities is something that I am interested in and something that I know a little about and would like to learn more. Another project I also came across (cannot seem to find it to reference to) was about using Big Data to help unlock the city for people with eye sight problems. In other words, using data that is being constantly collected to do something that empowers an individual.
It is just the start of my final project with little amount of research done so far but right now I would really like to learn more about Big Data and Future Cities and how the two can be combined and help empower vulnerable individuals, or do something to improve an individual's experience.
A proposal of my plan is the first deliverable of my final project so it is the first task set down for me to help me figure out what my final project will be.
